Check list

Do you ever feel like all the things you think- the things that are really "you" just get stuck in your head.
Blocked by basic etiquette.
Stopped by the policy that the patron is always right.
Foibled by fear of being sued for calling it like it really is  or fear your child may repeat what you have said in the wrong company.
Or maybe,
just feel like your day could be reduced to a checklist - most items with multiple checks per day:
Say yes
Say no
Talk about decisions and consequences
Ask someone in a govt agency for money
Apply bandages
Email
Phone
Wipe counter
Sell your worth
Dishes
Food
Help
Be invisible
Read
Yell
Smile while you think f#*% you
Say thank you
Get a surprise around-the-knee-nose-in-a-hip-bone hug
Clean bodies
Laundry
Get the coffee ready for tomorrow
Tomorrow it begins again
Tomorrow it begins again with the hopes the number of checks by hugs wins exceeds all others

Angel Food Cake

Grandma Bea made a lot of Angel Food Cakes...and she talked bad about a "box" angel food whenever she could (though I never remember her not eating them).  I made one of the MANY angel food recipes Dad found in her book.

Anything written on the back of an envelope has to be good....

It really took 15 eggs - I had really good eggs from a friend with chickens. Nice.

I whipped the whites for a good 10 minutes with the KitchenAide.  SO glad I was not using the hand powered egg beaters.

A 3G had to come check it out...I think my reminiscing about "Grandma's angel food cake pan..." just got to her.
Dad did the honors of cutting and critiquing the cake.  Of course, there was real whipped cream and sugared strawberries to top the cake.

Whipped cream placement - as a 3G looks on.  HURRY UP GRANDDAD!

The cake was delicious.  Much denser than a box angel food but a richer flavor.  Everyone loved it - but with strawberries and whipped cream I think anything would taste wonderful.

Sorry, Grandma, but for the time and money to make it from scratch I think I would do the box cake next time...they are really pretty good.

Love you, Grandma Bea.  Wish you were here.

I love you to distraction

What would you do for this sweet face?

Drive 80 miles to return her forgotten (and immeasurably beloved) dolphin and fish?

That is loving someone to distraction.  What could be more wonderful?

I love you too, Mom.

We are glad to be home, GranE.  Thanks, Dolphin and Fish

Half a Life

I have known Katie for half my life now - a fact she brought to my attention about a month ago.

I need a better word than just friend...

Here are some of her kids - and my two.

They have known each other their whole lives.

I have held all of them before they were a week old.  I will get to know them forever.

Lucky.

Caramel Marshmallow Treats

Another from Grandma Ruth's box.  I remember these - she did use the big marshmallow and they were delicious.  These treats would be on the tray with all the different treats at Christmas time.

I tried them with the girls using small marshmallows - thinking they would be super cute tea-party fare...

G2 ready to help
Who can resist marshmallows?

After dipping singles we decided to make caterpillars

A Siamese-triplet marshmallow

We made about this many and then August got burned with hot caramel...was a couple more dips and little sis was burned too...

But, they did taste like I remembered.

I DEFINITELY would use the big marshmallows next time!  And, DO NOT put them on waxed paper to harden.  They stuck to it and we lost several treats to the paper.  BOO!

Ring-a-lings

This is our second recipe in the "Grandma's Recipes" series.  From Grandma Ruth's box...GranE remembers it fondly.  We'll see if I got it right.

Ingredients.
For the filling

After mixing - it was really stiff filling

G3 decided to come in from playing to help

The filling was really hard to spread

Some of my one inch strips
Twisted and ready to bake - made two 1/2 sheet pans

After the first 15 min

After the orange glaze - ready for the last five min of baking
Can you just smell how wonderful our house smells right now...

Sticky goodness...all done....
G3 - deems Ring-a-ling a success

Getting Started...

Three Generations of Farm Girls are working together for this Blog...Thus the name FarmGirls 3G.

We decided to start blogging about old recipes - from Grandma Ruth's and Grandma Bea's recipe boxes.

Texas Hash - from Grandma Bea (I doubled the recipe to take to friends)

Onions

Chopped...they were really good onions.

Tomato from Summer 2010 and three pepper and onion blend from freezer

Rice and spice and hamburger I fried and froze

Mixed and ready to simmer for 30 minutes (mine only took 20)

The bowl I ate for lunch...it was better with some cheese sprinkled on top.  The girls rebelled - too many peppers.
